The unique shopping experience and worthwhile items that keep Tess McCants coming back
Tess McCants exits the 101, heading home for a weekend from school at UC Santa Barbara. The one-and-a-half-hour drive back is easy enough–and so is the 25-minute detour she takes to stop by the Erewhon Market in Calabasas before greeting her parents with a hug and smile at their Moorpark home, bags in hand.
Tess McCants has been an avid Erewhon Market-goer since the beginning of high school when her friend began working at the new ‘it’ L.A. grocery spot. Over the years, she has become an Erewhon Market expert, with tips, tricks, and go-to products that are college-budget approved and make the detour on her way home worth it.
First, McCants finds that simply browsing is a joyful experience at Erewhon Market.
“It’s a museum of sorts, with so many interesting items to read and Google up on,” explains the college junior. “Last time I went they had a $20 bottle of water. It was some kind of reverse-osmosis drink,” she remarks, laughing.
For those cruising the aisles, McCants recommends starting with the hot-food bar.
“There are so many different options and it's definitely the best deal,” she notes. “They don’t skimp on the portions, which makes the price comparable to getting lunch at another eatery.”
Her go-to options include the buffalo cauliflower, the white bean kale salad, and the coconut-turmeric chicken. Another must-try is the legendary breakfast burritos, which can be customized to fit every palette for $13.
“They have a bunch of different protein options and add-ons, and they stuff those burritos filled! I usually save part of it for later, which makes the price totally reasonable.”

McCants swears by the oatmeal raisin cookies for a sweet treat, the perfectly seasoned roasted pumpkin seeds, and the assorted homemade soups in big glass jars, that can double as cups and food storage.
McCants has made Erewhon a place to indulge in organic and quality products every so often without having to break the bank. Whether buying a few favorite snack items, browsing the aisles to see what is new, or grabbing a quick breakfast burrito, there are many ways to enjoy the offerings of Erewhon Market–even on a college student's budget.
